Food Labelling Rules Made Simple
Clear and accurate labels build trust and protect your business.
If your product is sold in Australia, it must meet the requirements of Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
Here’s what to include before you print.
What FSANZ Requires
Every packaged food or drink sold in Australia must display key information so customers can make safe, informed choices.
Include the following on your label:
- Product name
- Ingredient list
- Allergen declarations
- Nutrition information panel
- Net weight or volume
- Storage instructions
- Use-by or best-before date
- Business name and address
- Country of origin
Imported products must also comply with Australian labelling standards.
Ingredient Lists
List ingredients in descending order by weight.
Use plain, clear language. Avoid brand names or codes.
Example:
“Ingredients: Tomatoes (65%), Water, Sugar, Salt, Vinegar, Spices.”
Include additives or colours with their purpose, such as “Preservative (202)” or “Colour (120).”
Allergen Statements
Allergens must stand out and be easy to find.
Use bold text or a separate “Contains” statement under the ingredients.
Common allergens include: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and sesame.
If your product may contain traces of allergens from shared equipment, say so clearly.
Nutrition Information Panels
Most foods need a standard panel showing energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, sugars, and sodium.
Include values per serving and per 100g or 100mL.

Date Marking
“Use By” dates apply to safety-sensitive foods such as meat or dairy.
“Best Before” applies to products that remain safe but may lose quality over time.
Only one date type should appear on each label.

Storage and Handling Instructions
If your product needs refrigeration or special handling, include clear instructions.
Examples:
“Store below 4°C.”
“Keep sealed after opening.”
“Consume within 3 days of opening.”
Good instructions help reduce waste and maintain product quality.
Country of Origin Labelling
Packaged food sold in Australia must show where it was made or grown.
You can use the Australian Made logo if you qualify.
Otherwise, use standard text such as:
“Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients.” “Product of Australia.”
The style and size of origin statements are regulated, so check before printing.
Legibility Rules
Make sure your text is easy to read.
Most information needs a minimum text height of 1.5 mm, or 3 mm for capitals on small packages.
Keep a strong contrast between text and background to ensure readability.
Common Mistakes
Avoid missing allergens, incorrect ingredient order, and small print sizes.
Check that your contrast is clear and your business and origin details are included.
